Spain’s Carlos Alcaraz secured his second US Open title with a 6-2, 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Italy’s Jannik Sinner in a gripping four-set final at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Sunday.
The win, delayed by heightened security due to the presence of US President Donald Trump, propelled Alcaraz back to the top of the ATP rankings, ending Sinner’s 27-match winning streak on hard-court Grand Slams.
Alcaraz dominated early, breaking Sinner’s serve in the first game to claim the opening set in 37 minutes. Sinner mounted a comeback to win the second set 6-3, but Alcaraz regained control in the third with an unassailable serve.
The fourth set proved tense, with Sinner missing key opportunities before Alcaraz broke through in the fifth game, sealing the match with an ace on his third championship point.
The duo’s embrace at the net highlighted their rivalry, having faced off in three consecutive Grand Slam finals this year—Alcaraz winning the French Open epic and Sinner prevailing at Wimbledon. “I’m seeing you more than my family,” Alcaraz quipped, drawing a smile from Sinner, who said, “I tried my best today. I couldn’t do more.”
The match drew significant attention, with Trump’s attendance prompting boos from parts of the crowd and causing entry delays.
Alcaraz’s triumph marks the end of a 17-year drought for a men’s US Open title defense since Roger Federer’s five consecutive wins from 2004 to 2008.
Earlier on Saturday, Aryna Sabalenka retained the women’s title, defeating Amanda Anisimova in straight sets.
